CATERGORY: REJUVENATE PROSTATE
Supplements that Treat Prostate Enlargement
When you have BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia), your prostate is larger than normal. This causes problems like weak urine stream and frequent urination throughout the day and night.
While prescription drugs are available to treat these symptoms, there is risk of side effects. Supplements offer a safer alternative. The challenge is to identify the ones that work best for you.
Here’s a list of the more commonly used prostate supplements.
African Wild Potato - 4 studies indicate that African Wild Potato extracts taken either alone or in combination with other Beta-Sitosterol sources, reduce urinary symptoms, improve urine flow, and improve quality of life in patients with BPH. Beta-Sitosterol - 6 studies have determined that taking
Beta-sitosterol 60-130 mg orally in 2-3 divided doses daily significantly improves urinary symptoms, increases maximum urinary flow, and decreases residual urine volume; however, it does not affect prostate size.
Cranberry - One study showed that taking powdered dried Cranberry fruit 500 mg three times daily for 6 months improves lower urinary symptoms and reduces prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels compared to no treatment in men 45 years of age or older with elevated PSA levels, a negative prostate biopsy, and clinically confirmed non-bacterial prostatitis. Another study showed that taking dried Cranberry powder 250-500 mg daily for 6 months reduces lower urinary tract symptoms and improves voiding and storage symptoms compared to placebo in men 45 years of age and older without elevated PSA levels.
Flaxseed - Preliminary clinical research suggests that taking Flaxseed lignan extract 300 mg or 600 mg daily for 4 months significantly reduces lower urinary tract symptom scores compared to placebo in men with BPH. Also, taking Flaxseed lignan extract 600 mg daily appears to improve quality of life score compared to placebo in these patients.
Garlic - Preliminary clinical research suggests that taking aqueous Garlic extract 1 mg/kg daily for one month significantly decreases prostate mass and urinary frequency and significantly improves symptom scores and urinary flow rates compared to baseline in men with BPH. A lack of adequate control limits the validity of these results.
Pumpkin Seeds - 6 studies have determined that taking Pumpkin Seed oil or Pumpkin Seed alone or with Saw Palmetto and other ingredients improves symptoms of BPH. One study shows that taking Pumpkin Seed 5 grams twice daily for 12 months may be more effective than taking Pumpkin Seed extract 1000 mg twice daily in terms of overall symptoms and response to therapy. Some preliminary clinical research also suggests that taking Pumpkin Seed oil daily for 6 months may be as effective as the BPH medication Prazosin.
Pygeum - 7 studies indicate that taking Pygeum reduces the functional symptoms of BPH. Pygeum decreases nocturia (night-time urination) by 19%, increases peak urine flow by 23%, and reduces residual urine volume by 24% in men with BPH.
Red Clover - One study shows that taking Red Clover providing isoflavones 40-80 mg daily for 3 months improves some, but not all symptoms of BPH. It seems to decrease nocturnal urinary frequency and international prostate symptom scores (IPSS), as well as improve the quality of life in men with BPH. However, Red Clover isoflavones do not seem to affect urine flow rate, prostate-specific antigen (PSA) values, or prostate size.
Rye Grass - Taking Rye Grass pollen extract orally seems to improve symptoms such as frequency, nocturia, urgency, flow rate, dribbling, and pain in patients with mild to moderate BPH. Some researchers report decreased prostate size, improved urinary flow, and decreased residual urine volume.
Saw Palmetto - Research on Saw Palmetto for treating symptoms of BPH is inconsistent and contradictory. Several clinical studies lasting up to three years have shown that Saw Palmetto provides mild to moderate improvement in urinary symptoms such as frequent urination, painful urination, hesitancy, urgency, and perineal heaviness. 25 studies show that Saw Palmetto decreases nocturia, improves urinary flow, and lowers residual urine volume in patients with BPH.
Selenium - One study shows that taking Selenium 240 mcg plus Silymarin 570 mg daily for 6 months significantly reduces lower urinary tract symptoms in men with BPH. Another study shows that taking Tamsulosin 0.4 mg plus Saw Palmetto, Selenium, and Lycopene daily for one year significantly improves lower urinary tract symptoms and urodynamic parameters compared to tamsulosin-alone or the combination of Saw Palmetto, Selenium, and Lycopene alone in men with BPH.
