A UTI is an infection in any part of your urinary systems such as your kidneys, bladder, urethra, and ureters. Women are more prone to UTIs because they have a shorter urethra than men do.
Quite common actually. UTIs account for 8.1 million visits to a doctor every year with women having a lifetime risk of over 50 percent of developing a UTI.
There are mainly three types of UTIs:
Cystitis
This is an infection in your bladder. It usually causes frequent and painful urination. And may be accompanied by lower stomach pain or cloud, bloody urine.
Pyelonephritis (kidneys)
This is an infection in your kidney that usually occurs once the bacteria spread from your bladder to your kidneys. Symptoms may consist of: fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, and back pain.
Urethritis (urethra)
This is an infection in your urethra that is usually accompanied by painful urination and discharge.
There are a variety of factors that can lead to UTIs such as: sexual intercourse (especially if one did not pee before or after intercourse), diabetes, poor personal hygiene, wiping from back to front for women, problems emptying the bladder completely, blocked flow of urine (holding your pee for prolonged periods of time), and kidney stones.
Common symptoms of a UTI are strong and frequent urge to urinate, cloudy, bloody, or strong smelling urine, pain when peeing, nausea and vomiting, and muscle aches abdominal pains.
